What do I get when I buy a domain?

Hi,

I have yet never ordered a domain anywhere. I wanted to ask here something before I do.

What exactly do I get when I buy a domain?

I have a cpanel hosting and I want to buy somwhere a new domain name and park it in cpanel page “Parked Domains”. Either that or Addon Domains. But when I try to park some domain that is already taken then it says “this domain is controlled by another user” and sometimes it also says something like “make sure if this domain is registered with valid registar or if this is valid DNS” or something like that.

But what if I OWN the domain that I want to park? What do I get then when I buy a domain? Is there some kind of DNS Management section somewhere or something like that? What makes it different when I try to park a domain that I own? Do I have to do something somewhere before I park the domain I own? How does Cpanel know that the domain that I try to park belongs to ME?

@Compguy_PeteAug 17.2005 — From the sounds you need to buy the domain at a Registar take your pick of them godaddy, register, or even Network Solutions.

Then you need to use the SEPERATE control area at the Registar's site and tell the DNS settings to use the settings that reflect your webhosting. You get that info from your host. Then you can use the Add-on domain or Parking options.
