PHP is the most popular server-side scripting language and is worth learning because it's both powerful in addition to having numberous amounts of people that program it which would be willing to help you along the way. The other big choices would be JSP, CGI/PERL, Cold Fussion, ASP, SSJS, and .NET. JSP would be the most powerful outta there but you'd be bound to get much more help along the way if you chose PHP and you would be able to do almost everything that JSP can do. It is also debatable wether or not JSP really [i]is[/i] the most powerful server-side scripting language -- but there are different factors involved in rating each scripting language. It really matters what scripting language you best program, which is easiest to learn, your budget, how many people can help you along the way, and what you're trying to do with it. Each scripting langauge has it's strengths and weaknesses, but you get what you pay for.
It's up to you which language to choose. But take my advice and choose PHP. I still regret learning PERL before PHP.
Might wanna also pick up a "PHP" book, a "MySQL" book (for database work -- which you'd need for storing information on the server), and a ".htaccess" book. You don't need to actually pick up these books if you don't want, but it speeds up the learning process, basically a good heads-up. Or you could always pay someone to do that work for you.
