ban the word javascript from this forum lol

lol there really needs to be an automatic system which automatically tells people they’re in the wrong forum if they try to post the word “javascript” in here. I guess that wouldn’t be possible though lol. This forum gets more javascript questions than java questions though, which is quite annoying 😑

@rhsundergroundAug 06.2005 β€”Β some people just don't take the time to look at what they're doing. there is a sticky at the top of the forum, and aside from active policing of the forum (i have just pruned several JS threads) there really isn't much we can do...(

@agent_x91authorAug 06.2005 β€”Β Some people? You have a real gift for understatement?

It's a shame there's nothing more that can be done. I come on the java forum to try to help people with java and I get bombarded with javascript threads?:mad:You'd think people would learn from all of the JS threads on here that they're not supposed to post them here. Oh well.

@buntineAug 06.2005 β€”Β I think we have it under control for now. But agent_x91 is correct; we have a huge amount of JS questions in here.

Feel free to help out, though.

Regards

@rhsundergroundAug 06.2005 β€”Β when i was scraping through the forum, my best clue was to look for a topic that had only one reply: buntine :p
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@buntineAug 06.2005 β€”Β haha. I should just make a generic reply and just cut and paste it every time.

Woohoo you get to fulfil your lifelong career ambition - a dustbinman!?

@JPnycAug 07.2005 β€”Β I could write a tooltip that would appear on mouseover of the new thread button in this forum, saying do NOT post JS questions here.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@Khalid_AliAug 07.2005 β€”Β that may be another good option JP..thanks, the bold text in the description has helped and there are fewer JavaScript posts in the java section in comparison to before, I hope the tool tip will deter few more, however I can bet anything that there will always be a group of people who don't pay attention to what their eyes may be seeing and will still post here..:-)
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@JPnycAug 07.2005 β€”Β If you go to http://discussions.virtualdr.com/index.php? , go into one of the forums and mouseover the new thread button, you'll see what I mean
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@JPnycAug 07.2005 β€”Β On 2nd thought, that would be annoying for the regulars though. To constantly have this message popping up

I am sure regs will understand why the tooltip exists and won't have any problem with it..:-)

BTW, just visited the link, I am sure the tooltip for this forum will be very short, cus I will be surprised if any will read that long detailed tip...
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@buntineAug 07.2005 β€”Β Yeh, I reckon it is worth the extra hastle. Just have a quick note.

Regards.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@agent_x91authorAug 07.2005 β€”Β Yeah, that might be helpful. Just write "DO NOT POST JAVASCRIPT QUESTIONS HERE" in bold.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@JPnycAug 07.2005 β€”Β Well that one was just for that site, which deals with general PC troubleshooting and support. Newbies need to be told what info to post. Yes, here it would be very short. "This forum is for JAVA only. Do not post Javascript question here, or you'll be killed, your family imprisoned, and your pets neutered".
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@agent_x91authorAug 07.2005 β€”Β or you'll be killed, your family imprisoned, and your pets neutered
Would make more sense if it was you neutered, your family killed, and your pets imprisoned. (or just burned)

@Lone_ReactionAug 07.2005 β€”Β Why not just change the java forum to "Java, not javascript" forum? People that come here should be smart enough @_@

Edit: Oh it's already obvious enough... but still, make it bigger!
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@JPnycAug 07.2005 β€”Β Well we already have that in bold type but it's still overlooked by some

@Khalid_AliAug 07.2005 β€”Β Well we already have that in bold type but it's still overlooked by some
Exactly, my understanding is that there is a huge number of people who have no idea what is Java and what is JavaScript, hence when they see a word Java they just assume it may be JavaScript without going into any details.

I will have to say that we need interactive PC's where if some makes such mistake, a huge punch hits them on the nose.... :p

Edit.

Just occured to me that in the above scenario I could be at the recieving end as well....
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@JPnycAug 07.2005 β€”Β We'd get sued LOL.

I'll ponder the possibilities. Maybe putting the bold text in RED would be enough.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@JPnycAug 07.2005 β€”Β Actually part of the problem may be it's inclusion in the forum that's all about the web. Java has web uses of course, but that's really just a small part of the whole lang. Might help to move it to the scripting section, and rename it "Programming and ServerSide Scripting ". Then put the JS forum with all the other web-only technologies.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@bringerofnightAug 08.2005 β€”Β actually it's possible to block the word javascript from a forum there's this one forum simialar to phpbb capable of doing that

In a perfect world, yes. The only weakness is: this is Earth and humans are extraordinarily stupid.

Regards.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@agent_x91authorAug 08.2005 β€”Β Yup. Although it takes a whole new level of stupidity to be able to make complicated scripts in javascript, and then get the LANGUAGE you're using confused with another. It's like learning german for several years and then getting it confused with dutch
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@buntineAug 08.2005 β€”Β Yeh. But that is not what happens you see. :p

People come here with no programming experience and just see the word Java and click it. Their brother/boss/colleague/friend told them "just use Java" (but actually referring to JavaScript).

Regards.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@agent_x91authorAug 08.2005 β€”Β Well, most people generally seem to have a least a little bit of experience with using javascript - some of the questions asked about javascript here are complex enough to indicate that they at least understood basic javascript...
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@DragonsGirl2001Aug 09.2005 β€”Β Hey guys... I am one of those who had posted a JS question here, and Ill tell you what, I felt pretty stupid. I can understand your annoyance, I would be too. It can be a bit confusing for a newbie, who really dosent know the difference.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@JPnycAug 09.2005 β€”Β Don't feel stupid, it's perfectly understandable. And that's the largest reason why the forum topics have just been realigned so that Javascript is now with all the other "front end" or "client-side" technologies. We hope it'll help clear up some confusion.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@WaylanderAug 11.2005 β€”Β i had thought to use javascript itself to thwart the javascript problem and suggest a script on submit for the the post button to search for the string "javascript" in post text but then realised not many of these posts actually have any consistant words to search for....

lol maybe the answer is an advanced handling procedure the checks code blocks for actual javascript code! now that sounds like a relatively promising project.... maybe it could then be altered to hunt and destroy javascript everywhere!!

no wait that would kind of be a virus forget i mentioned that....
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@OakAug 17.2005 β€”Β lol
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@agent_x91authorAug 17.2005 β€”Β Yes, we can use this virus to allow java to conquer the world, and destroy javascripts everywhere! You're an evil genius!?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@agent_x91authorAug 17.2005 β€”Β Wow - this actually seems to be working. There are nowhere near as many javascript posts here now. Though that's probably something to do with the forums being rearranged
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@buntineAug 17.2005 β€”Β haha Yeh. JavaScript appears before Java now, right? That should do the trick!
