Running Multiple IE versions

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone knows how I can run multiple versions of IE on the same PC? I currently run IE 6.0, but I want to install some previous versions (IE4.0, 5.0, and 5.5). Unfortunately when I install these they overwrite my current version of IE, even when I change the installation directory to a new directory. Maybe someone knows of a tool I can use that will enable me to override the IE installation settings, so I can install different versions. Anyway, any real help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

@Zach_ElfersDec 09.2002 — Try copying the Internet Explorer folder from Program Files and pasting it somewhere else on your harddrive. Otherwise, those files will just be overwritten. I don't know if this will work or not though.

@punkasstripinDec 09.2002 — microsoft purposely makes it *very* hard to install multiple versions. you could install windows twice on your computer... one with each ie version, but that's a real pain in the butt.

@StefanDec 09.2002 — There is a possibility to use both IE 4 and one of the others at the same time (but rather pointless, since noone should really be using 4.0 nowdays anyway).

As for IE 5+ except for the suggestino with multiple booting (several version of Windows) there are a few more options.

  • * Using a virtual enviroment software. Very nice (allows you to open a window inside your OS with any other Win OS in it with into which you can install any version of MSIE). Problem is that these softwares cost several $100.

  • * Use a software like Norton Ghost to make several copies of your C drive, with different OSs installed.

  • * Get access to several computers. Mayby you got access to some old crappy 100MHz comp just collectiong dust somewhere? It might not be good for anything else, but checking your site with a browser should work.
