How to parse text only?

For example, if I pull HTML out of the database, it would be formatted according to HTML, for example.
[COLOR=Navy]<div align=center> [B]Hello, World! [/B] </div>
<div> [B]Today we will do this:[/B]
<ol>
<li> [B]thing1; [/B] </li>
<li> [B]thing2. [/B] </li>
</ol>
<div align=right>[B]Thats all, folks![/B] <img src=”images/goodbye.gif”></div>[/COLOR]

I want it to display text only, without the image, and no formating, such as:

[COLOR=Navy][B]Hello, World. Today we will do this: thing1; thing2. That’s all, folks![/B][/COLOR]
