How do I create a Forum?

I wondered if anyone could help me. I am currently building a website using Macromedia Dreamweaver using HTML.

I have nearly finished the site but would like to add a small forum for our members to use. What I would like is a main page that takes you into different forums, i.e. General, FAQ etc. Then an area where you can post a new thread, read other messages or reply etc.

I would like it so that people have to register to be able to post messages, but anyone can view them. When people register I would like some information about them to do with the website (which is a gaming guild website). Then they will automatically be registered once they have clicked a link from an email which is sent to them (kind of like this site).

Registered members can have the ability to add a signature, and possibly send and receive private messages (depending on how difficult this is to set up)

Can I create this forum using Dreamweaver or do I need a separate programme? Does anyone have any links to sites that provide forums such as this one but without the advertising and pop ups they all seem to display?

If anyone could help me I would be most grateful as I would like our members to be able to use the site as soon as possible.

Thank you all ?

@ScleppelJul 08.2005 — There's PHPBB and PunBB that are free forums. You have to have PHP and MySQL installed on your server (ask your host if you don't know) to use them, though. Also if you ask your host they might have pre-installed forums that you can use.

Free forum, no ads when your logged in, fully customizable. You can make just about everything and change the colors to what you want.

Just try it out.

@PierceMooreJun 17.2009 — I definitely suggest PHPBB (good call, Scleppel) for a free forum solution. Well supported, great looking stuff. If you have the resources, though, vBulletin is a great little thing though. Very very powerful stuff.

@NogDogJun 18.2009 — You could also do some comparing/contrasting by looking at the open-source PHP forum listings at http://php.opensourcecms.com/scripts/show.php?catid=5&cat=Forums .
