Force JS to run in "nice" mode?

I’m parsing relatively large XML files that takes about 20 seconds or so to go through completely. During this time however the browser (IE & FF) locks up/bogs down/stops responding (i use an animated gif and note when the motion starts and stops up again) until the processing is done. Is there any way to force JS to run in nice mode, or to run parralelly, or some other method to keep the browsers from choking during the times it has to read these files?

Thanks,

-james
