Freeware editors with multiple doc support..

Ok, I’m finding Notepad 2 just isn’t going to cut it for the next few website projects I’m working on, so I need a little help.

I need an editor that has code highlighting (HTML/CSS/PHP bare minimum – C/C++, ASM, Perl, Python, Javascript, Java, and SQL would be great too), multiple doc support (with tabs, allowing me to do things such as “replace in all documents”, etc). It would also help if it didn’t clutter up my dirs with extra files it creates (Such as NoteTab Lite’s .bak files).

It’d also be great if it ran on multiple platforms (Linux and Windows, Windows is primary though). If it runs under Linux, I don’t want to have to deal with any KDE lib deps. I hate KDE apps.

@KaishainJul 04.2005 — If you'd spent five minutes browsing through some Google results, you'd have probably come across websites like these:

http://www.webdevelopersjournal.com/software/webtools.html

They have a few tools in there , some for Windows, some for Linux. They also have some tutorials and such-like which go into detail about what programs are out there, what they're capable of, and what other programs you'll need to complete your entire suite of tools.

I'd list them all, but I can't be bothered. Do your own dirty work.

@invertedpandaauthorJul 04.2005 — Ugh, I get so tired of explaining this.

There is a reason I don't always find soemthing from google for my software - I want USER reviews of CURRENT VERSIONS. Most website listings aren't up to date, and they don't provide insight into whether the UI is useable, whether it is stable, whether it has any quirks. I have already looked at that page and skimmed it over. Forums are almost always the best resource a person has for finding GOOD software - software that is useable. If I wanted to waste my time troving through google and troving Freshmeat, and then googling for reviews of the latest version, I would - however, it is often hard to find good reviews of freeware apps, especially obscure or new ones.

Sorry if I seem pissy, but I just got up, and have to go to my cousin's wedding in a couple hours.

Seems like you are looking for the JEdit Programmer's Text Editor.

@invertedpandaauthorJul 04.2005 — I didn't even realize JEdit ran under Windows.

However, there was some reason for this statement, but I didn't like it when I tried it under Linux. Something about it just didn't work right.

@pmusuJul 04.2005 — Try NVU, it was just released, so i did not try it.

JEdit runs on any box with Java run-time on it. I have it working on Windows, Linux and Mac. JEdit is extremely flexible with all the settings and macros, it does exactly what you want. If it doesn't do what you want it to, it is probably you that doesn't realize where to adjust settings.

@invertedpandaauthorJul 04.2005 — I don't really need a WYSIWYG editor.. Will Nvu bork any of my code?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@invertedpandaauthorJul 08.2005 — JEdit is a definate no-go. Some of the bugs cause too many problems to be worth it - plus, it creates extra files in the same dir as the HTML files, which is a hassle for me.

@bathurst_guyJul 09.2005 — Try EditPlus

@invertedpandaauthorJul 09.2005 — HTML Kit seems to work well. We'll see how well it handles a week of work ?

@ray326Jul 09.2005 — HTML-kit has very few gotchas. The only one I've seen is related to using the Gecko real-time preview (it does restore focus to the editor after the preview update) so I just don't do that. If I want to fiddle like that I use the CSS editor in the Firefox extension.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@invertedpandaauthorJul 09.2005 — Yeah, the preview is basically useless to me anyway, since I make good use of SSI and PHP Includes in my sites.

@bkellyJul 09.2005 — After reading this thread I tried to download HTML-Kit from here:

http://www.chami.com/html-kit/download/

Both of the download links solicit a page not found page. An of course, after searching multiple pages of the site, I found no link or email address to tell them of this problem. Does anyone know what I can down load this HTML-Kit?

Thank you,

Bryan

@Stephen_PhilbinJul 09.2005 — I'd definitely recommend Jedit. It's the ugliest editor I've ever used, but it's also the best. editor I've ever used. Like I said, it's ugly and there's a blue vertical line I can neither figure out what it is for or get rid of, but that's about all I could fault it on. If you don't want it to make duplicate beckup files, then just take the tick out of the box that says "Create backup on save?", it's a lot less fuss than trying to find another editor. I can't imagine I'll ever need any WYSINWYG features so I can't imagine I'll ever have need for a different editor.

@invertedpandaauthorJul 09.2005 — Mr. Herer: Jedit had some issues and would occasionally lock a file to where I couldn't save it as that filename, and would require me to save as a different filename, close Jedit, delete the old file, and then reopen.. bit of a hassle ? I'm preping to look into bug reports on it now, and if there isn't one reported I'll submit it.

HTML-Kit has some great features, though, that I really like. Assuming JEdit works well enough while under Linux and BSD (I use Ion2 on some of my boxes, which is a tiling window manager - Certain apps don't like it ?), I'll probably use it while I'm not in Windows.

BKelly: I put up a quick mirror over here: http://www.the-engine.org/HKSetup.exe - Let me know when you get it. I'll probably leave it up for the day, just in case..

However - don't post this link elsewhere. I don't need people soaking up all my bandwidth this month, since in a week or so the my personal composition and recording site will be going live (intense graphic layout, plus 320kbps mp3s and PDF scores of all my classical, classical-fusion, neo classical, and guitar solos that I decide to release).

@Stephen_PhilbinJul 10.2005 — As far as I know, HTML-Kit only works on Windows. I certainly couldn't find a Linux version when I looked anyway. Never had that problem you meantioned though. Which OS was that on and what version was it? It wasn't a stable rellease was it?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@invertedpandaauthorJul 10.2005 — Yeah, I know HTML-Kit only works on Windows - that's why i said I'd use JEDit for Linux, assuming I don't encounter the same problem.

The problem was in Windows (XP), latest stable release.
