A Newbie has arrived

Following are my personal experiences how I got into PHP if you want to know about my problem scroll below:

My Story:

Hello, I’m 15yrs 9mnths old. I jumped into PHP after having asked ? a question on comparison of popularity and usability of the existing server-side languages. Well, I had a good(well below average compared to others, but atleast got the job done) track record with HTML, CSS and Photoshop. However my nightmares started with Perl. Not that the language is junk or undeciperable for normal humans but the syntax of Perl especially while writing CGI scripts was a bit weird because it was very unconventional compared to client-side languages which I was used to.
Then I by the recommendations of the altruistic geniuses of this forum I stumbled upon PHP. I was excited by the fact that it is much client-like except that it is actually *server-side*. What an irony ! But truly PHP is very austere and easy-to comprehend and the in-built functions of PHP were simply fabulous. I was excited by the very C++-like functions and classes. Though for now PHP seems simple ( I wrote a e-mail validating script within a day of being introduced to the language).
PHP stands out for it’s flexibilty and ease. I hope the same does not happen with me as it happened with Perl. It won’t hopefully because I started learning Perl from command-line whereas PHP started directly form CGI scripting.

HERE’s my problem:

I don’t seem to get how to store certain variables as a formatted-file on the server so that I could save IP addresses, referrers etc.and use C++ program to analyse them.
Another question what’s MySQL and DB? How do I use them for storing email-addresses in an encrypted file(without SSL) for my mailing list.
Thanks! This forum certainly ROCKS!! ?

NOTE 😮 : Sorry for all the ill-things said to Perl. It is great perhaps not for me.

@ShmohelJun 30.2005 — MySQL is a (FREE) relational database that is offered by many webhosts. In my experience with PHP, MOST php incorporates the usage of a MySQL database. (Although I know someone out there is ready to jump in and give a shout out to Postgre)

Have you ever worked with databases before? Perhaps Access? If not, just think of it like a series of spreadsheets that stores information in rows and columns.

To work on your problem, what it sounds like you need is a script that will take the IP address of a user when the browse to your site, and then INSERT that into a database (like MySQL). You can then recall that information from the database for whatever purposes you would like.

@pratik_learnerauthorJun 30.2005 — Yeah I did work with MS Access at my school. But I didn't purchase a copy of MS Office. But now I have one. Which database solution would be useful? Please try to link to some *complete* tutorials. Thanks
