What is salt? Not the stuff on the table!

I have been trying to educate myself on PHP and MySQL. I’ve gotten to the point where I am now dealing with security issues and I’ve come across a term used frequently called “salt”.

What does this term mean? Is this suppossed to be like the term “foo”?

Oh, and Foo is just a random word they came up with for naming non-existant things. Comes from FUBAR.
