Transfer variables from PHP to JScript?

Is there a way to transfer the value of a variable from php to a JavaScript variable in a same document. I tried this but it gives JScript error….

$a = 1;

echo “
<script language=’JavaScript’>
<!–
var a = ‘ ” . $a . ” ‘;

</script>”;
?>
