just learning…

Hello. I am trying to learn php to create a website. my goal is to create a game similar to Kings of chaos or utopia, maybe not as complex, but enough to allow multiple users to interact with each other. i am familiar with some html. I need some sites where i can learn javascript and php. I have seen many tutorials but they are all too complicated for me and not thorough enough when explaining it. Are there any websites that explains in simple details how to script using these languages? ive tried php.net, w3schools, and many others. all of them were begginers.

@Stephen_PhilbinJun 17.2005 — Well I've never heard of this Kings of Chaos thing but are you sure you want to be making a game with PHP and Javascript? Is it designed to be just a two minute screw around thing whilst yer on yer coffee break at work and then to be forgotten forever after? Or is it meant to be like an actual 3D game?

@slack44authorJun 17.2005 — i would love it if i could make it 3d, but i just want it to be a game where a person can login and choose options. like one button says go into the forrest while another says eat food. or one that says attack monster or something.

@Stephen_PhilbinJun 17.2005 — Well if you're using PHP and Javascript etc, then the game will most likely be much more text based than graphically based (let alone 3D). It wouldn't be very interactive either. You could have a login system and have your own character etc, but interacting with other players in a sensible and coherrent way would be a complete nightmare. If it was a single player kind of game, then you wouldn't have to worry about interaction between players, but it'd still be quite low on the prettyness scale compared to normal games.

If you wanted 3D then you'd be looking for something made in (most likely) C++. A program that people install and run on their computers, rather than simply pages over http.

If you wanna stick with it and go for a single player text based kinda thing then PHP would be ok. But you'd still have to do quite a lot of solid learning. For PHP you can't do any better than http://www.zend.com/manual/ really. It's the actual manual, detailing every function PHP has to offer, giving examples of use and describing potential use. There's also other more general articles to be found in the rest of the developer zone too. It's all clear and concise and explains everything but doesn't waste time mincing about.

PHP Javascript and web authoring in general is not something for the impatient though. There are no easy ways out or short cuts. You can only do what you know and you can only know what you take the time to learn. Hell, I've been going for two hears almost now and I still suck.
