Someone? Anyone? help…

Im sorry if i sound dumb to all of you but i want to create a certian type of site and i dont know how to go about doing it. I have no php experience at all. I just mainly know html.

I want to have a site where people can come and make a free account that includes small profile for themselves such

as their username,homepage,info,photo and then one of them yahoo icons that shows the users yahoo! online/offline status that when you click on it opens up a yahoo IM. Then i would like the members to be able to login and update all their info except their photo at anytime they want. On top of all that, when guest come to my site and click to view the member profiles i want only the profiles that yahoo! indicates online to show and then an option to show all offline profiles.

I was told that i was better off using hosted sites instead of running it off my home computer for this
since my pc is not set up for it. now what exacly am i going to need to do this, is mySQL or SQL required
for this ? is there anything i need to download and install ? i still need to learn php on top of all this
or could i do it with html ?

any kind of detailed information would help me. i have been online reading for 2 days and im just so confused.

@BeachSideJun 16.2005 — You would need some serious knowledge of PHP/mySQL! Also if you expected to have more than a few people on at any one time then you would be best to use a hosted site. Also you might want to look into something like [URL=http://www.phpbb.com/]PHPbb2[/URL] which is free and as we all know... free is good! ?

@SheldonJun 16.2005 — No, you would need php/mysql knowladge, even to a minimun. You can get very good tutorials, just search google or hotscripts.com, you want a server with php and mysql access, they are cheep enough. With the yahoo online/offline status just have a look at yahho.com and i am sure they offer the code, i know how to with aim, but now sure with yahoo.

Download some scripts, do a few Tutorials and ask for as much help on here as you need. Just remember to put your code in [ p h p] tags [ / p h p ] and everyone will be glad to help!

Everything you want is posiable just try, once you get the hang of it you'll fly trough it!

@BeachSideJun 16.2005 — To do what they asked the in the first post they would have to use some sort of scripting language (PHP) and a database (mySQL)

There is no way that only HTML would handle what they were trying to do.

Now the Yahoo! Online/Offline thing is a different story...

i would just only get the online's to show seperate from the offline's. now would that be an html matter or still php ?
