OK guys recently when I’ve been searching for a host I’ve noticed something. Why is Linux hosting so much more expensive than Windows osting. This is kind of a major bummer for me as I’m a windows user. Could someone please enligten me on the reason.
@qznJun 14.2005 — #Ive noticed Unix hosting to be higher but I always just guessed it was for stability. For Linux to be inherently more expensive doesn't make much sense since it is essentially free to install. It could be the whole "prestige" about how Linux hardly develops virii because it's attacked less. I guess I don't know the answer but think it's a decent discussion topic hehe
@Sceptile_MasterauthorJun 14.2005 — #I have seen some sites with outstanding Linux packages like I have never seen before but their windows package was just normal.
@effectwebmediaJun 21.2005 — #It really just depends. You'll find hosting prices all over the board. Sometimes the price differences means your getting much better support, sometimes it means that company has been charging a high amount since the dawn of web hosting and hasn't bothered to change it, because they love ripping people off.
Is linux more stable. Yes. Did you know that 99% of the viruses out there are for windows?
@effectwebmediaJun 21.2005 — #Our hosting prices are inexpensive for the amount of personal attention giving to our hosting clients. For example, if a client needs an answer, they can call and get one of our staff instantly.
@aixagentJun 23.2005 — #In my experience, and being within the Web Hosting industry, I've found Linux hosting prices to be relatively cheaper in a lot of cases.
The simplest answer is that the costs of running a Linux web host can often be cheaper if you take advantage of the many opensource/free applications for Linux platforms. Secondly, there is a huge abundance of Linux web hosts that run the basic PHP/MySQL package and the number of competition drives prices down.
I have seen the same for Windows hosting as competition becomes more fierce, but it really depends on what the host is providing. ColdFusion hosting tends to be a bit more expensive than normal hosting accounts due to the costs of obtaining/licensing ColdFusion MX.
