validatin an email

i am validating an email using :

[code=php]str.match(/([a-zA-Z0-9._-]+@[a-zA-Z0-9._-]+.[a-zA-Z0-9._-]+)/gi);[/code]

but what i do if i have an email like this :

[QUOTE]

[email protected]

[/QUOTE]

which means 2 dots (.) and not 1?
how do i handle the cases of 1 or 2 dots in the email

/^([w-]+@[w-]+.[w-]+(.[w-]+)?)$/

I would not specify the 'g' or 'i' flags for this -- they are not needed.
