having only one h1

i am going to style it with css, but for text only browsers, would it be better to only have one h1 element so that it is bigger than all of the others?

@BonRougeMay 15.2005 — It makes sense to only have one h1 element anyway.

@JDM71488authorMay 16.2005 — i believe i am, now anyways... i used to design for graphical browsers, but now i try to write the page pretty much without style, and then style it... i am taking more time make sure that the page will still display correctly and in order as much as possible to those without style...

thanks...

@ray326May 16.2005 — I try to use my h1 as part of the page heading or banner. If it contains the same text as the title that might even be a good thing to the search bots.

@jmaresca2005May 16.2005 — you should have a <h> </h> at the beginning of your content and at the end of your content. this is an SEO technique.

indeed,

some SEO techniques are dirty! ?

@jmaresca2005May 16.2005 — who is to say you can not have <h> tags where you want them in your html. search engines like them, so why not try to code for that. this is not a dirty trick. it isnt keyword stacking or anything like that. after the title and description, header tags are most important. they like 1 at the beginning and one at the end. this technique is only doing what the search engines like, this is not attempt to fool a search engine in any way. and speaking of being semantically correct, who is to say my content can not look like this.

<h1> This is the title of the paragraph</h1>

<p>This is the content of the paragraph.</p>

<h5>this is the end of the paragraph.</h5>.

Not only is this great for SEO, it is not semantically incorrect. web knowledge goes far beyond HTML.

@LiLcRaZyFuZzYMay 16.2005 — let me remind you the title of the thread : "having only one h1".

h is a heading so i would do it somewhat like this

<h1>Big title(of the website)</h1>

<h2>Medium title</h2>

<p>content of the §</p>

<h2>Medium title</h2>

<p>content of another §</p>

but i dont understand why you would need an "end of the paragraph"?

@JDM71488authorMay 16.2005 — ^^^ agreed...

what whould the <h> say at the bottom anyhow? "this is the end of this paragraph?" not saying you couldn't be correct, but i see no use for it...
