PHP and server authentication

Can you have php authenticate a user?

I have some areas of the website that uses server authentication to see if they have access that area of the site. Intead of having the server see that they have not been logged in and having it show the prompt box wating for server authentication, I would like to have a page that has a form with a user and password box. When they have entered the correct password and username (that will be checked in the php script) How do i have the server then authenticate them?
