checking YM buddies if online or offline using PHP?

Does PHP scripts can be used to check if the YM (yahoo messenger) buddies are online or offline in a web page? like in the website of YAHOO.com, a smiley icon beside the Yahoo ID that have no color tells that the person is offline and a colored smiley icon beside the Y!ID tells that the person is online.
Can PHP script do something like this?
Anyone who has the idea?

EDIT: and by the way, like in yahoo website, if it clicks the link of the yahoo ID, it opens the PM (Personal Message) or IM (instant message) box.
I’ve seen a website, and it was a PHP page and have the same idea as this. so i posted this thread here.

@SpectreReturnsApr 26.2005 — You would probably have to connect to the Yahoo database to figure that out. I believe vB does it though.
