page only loads correctly once in IE, incorrectly once in FF

This page has been driving me crazy for some time.. to make things easier for everyone, I have a version of it posted online you can all take a look at.

I suddenly realized that the latest version of my code actually loads up properly the very first time in Internet Explorer. After that, there are problems with the width (until the cache is cleared). In Firefox, the reverse happens, i.e. the page comes in all screwed up the first time it loads, and then is fine every time after!

To see what I’m talking about, you can take a look at

If you are interested in how the page got to where it is now, or wonder why I’ve done things as I have, you can check the old thread at

@MalkalypseauthorApr 17.2005 — I'm guessing this is something to do with the order in which the data is loaded, so that once the information is all cached, it stops functioning in IE, and starts functioning in FF... can anyone confirm whether I'm on the right track with that, or how to fix it if I am?

Also, I'm thinking the problem may not result from a Javascript specific error. I tried just using the html table, which yields the same results without the ratio correction. However, I would have hoped that the variables defined within Javascript would have fixed this problem, which they apparently don't.

Most significantly, it seems that the width attribute just plain doesn't work the way it's meant to in IE, which I find particularly odd. As for Firefox, I am guessing if I can just get it to load all of the correct information ahead of time, the page should come up correctly.

@VladdyApr 18.2005 — And the point of this scaling is???

And what happens when users have scripting disabled???

And I wonder if anything will be comprehensible on a PDA with 320x200 resolution???

Advice: Learn the means of properly delivering the content - that is what majority of web users is after...

@MalkalypseauthorApr 18.2005 — The point of the scaling is so that the site will not overflow on an 800x600 screen, but will not be a tiny speck on a 1600x1200 screen, as per the request of the client. If the users have scripting disabled, I have a rudimentary version of the page prepared that bypasses the scripting.

Also, as the page is intended to convey a significant amount of audio and graphics content (the purpose being to sell musical instruments), I'm not entirely sure that a PDA is the correct format to be viewing it on.

I think I have considered the purpose of my web page and how best to get there. I also think I know more about my situation than you do. I'm not looking for advice on why I shouldn't be using Javascript, but on how to solve the problem I've already stated.

@MalkalypseauthorApr 19.2005 — Incidentally, I've had some people say that they can't see the problem.

"Reload" doesn't cause a problem, while sometimes closing and reopening the browser does.

To see the functionality break down, please look at

click on "LINK", and then "Go Back" from the new page.
