very, very strange…

Hey all,

I am having a problem with one of my sites I am currently developing for a company I am trying to start. When I save as .htm it loads perfect, then when I save as a .php it screws up really bad. I have PHP 5 properly configured, and my HTML code is 100% W3C compliant. I currently have no PHP in the document, but will soon once I figure out why the page is not loading right. To see the error for yourself go here first http://65.68.101.2/index2.htm – don’t mind the dummy data inside the news boxes, as this is just temporary, and not updated obviously. Now once you see all the news boxes there and everything looks fine, go here http://65.68.101.2 they are exactly the same, all I did was save with another extension. Can anyone help me with this error. If you want to see another .php page of mine that loads fine go here
http://65.68.101.2/about.php – I don’t know why this one loads fine, but the other one doesn’t. They are 100% compliant with W3C, and I have done error checking for table cells by colorizing them, and trying to figure out if they don’t span to areas I may have not COLSPAN’d or ROWSPAN’d to. One thing that is really weird is that it doesn’t look messed up on my server, only on other computers. If you can help at all I would appreciate it very, very much. Thanks for your time, Jeff Dran.

@SpectreReturnsApr 13.2005 — The source of those first two pages aren't the same. Other than being half rendered, I see no other problems. Is that what you're talking about?

(Plus if it isn't rendering your PHP properly, it probably isn't set up right)

@xhunterauthorApr 13.2005 — The source in fact is the same. The only difference is when it tries to parce the .php file, it screws it all up when you go to view the source. I don't have any PHP in the document, it is only named to .php. I did this because people have reported errors similar to mine, and I didn't want to have to code 300 lines, then to find out it doesn't parce right. I have previous experience with PHP 4, but I recently upgraded to PHP 5, and this is when the errors started. I configured all as it said in the documentation, (which I did the manual way), and configured Apache, MySQL (which is also a little buggy). Well thx for reading, if you can help, I would appreciate it. I hate having to figure this stuff out by myself all the time. Jeff

@SpectreReturnsApr 13.2005 — Perhaps you have some ?> tags or something in your script which when php tries to parce it closes itself?

@MarkLApr 13.2005 — I copied your .html script and uploaded it to my server, checking it out with both .html and .php extensions, and it worked fine. There are a couple of possibilities as to what is going wrong on your end.

I noticed that in your META tags you state that you are using notepad to compose your .html files. Your problem may be as simple as the way you are changing the extension on the file. If you are just opening up the file in notepad, and then saving it with a .php extension from notepad, then notepad may actually be saving the file as filename.php.txt instead of filename.php. To check if this is the problem, right click on the file in windows and select properties, if the file type is shown as 'Text file' then notepad has tacked the .txt extension on to the file, if it says 'PHP file' then it has been saved correctly. To fix this problem, just go into DOS command line, and rename or copy the file there.

Next, I noticed that your link to the PHP file here just has an IP address with no filename or subdir, and I am getting a DNS error attempting to access that link. Try dropping the file into your cgi-bin subdir or lower, and constructing a link with the full path name to the file.

If those tips do not fix the problem, then you will want to look into your PHP settings next, maybe you have something incorrect there. I am running PHP 4, and you said you are running PHP 5. I don't have any experience with setting up PHP 5, so maybe someone else can help you out there.

@xhunterauthorApr 15.2005 — I have tried everything, and I think that PHP5 is just flat out screwed. I am going to put PHP4 back on, as I don't see anything great about PHP5 anyways. None of the help provided was useful, mainly treating me like a no0b, but thx anyways. If anyone here as experienced any problems with PHP5, let me know. Thx, Jeff

@webgovernorApr 15.2005 — Um, I've been using PHP5 since it was released (almost), no problems here,

sure it's not the server?

Are you really really sure?

Are you super duper major sure?

I've never had a problem like that, not even close, but, however,

I have seen some "bugs" (mostly in accessing mySql) but they were fixed

a few days afterwards.

If this error doesn't have to do with the server, then you should send it

to someone at either PHP.net or phpbuilder.com, at least that's what I

did, maybe there's a better place...

Well, good luck!
