how to view a table from a MySQL database

ok.. i know this seems wierd, but i want to see if a table is there on a MySQL database, but the table has no data, so im not sure how you would check to see if its there if there is no data to display. Thanks!

$result = mysql_query("SHOW TABLES FROM database_name LIKE '$tableName'");
if(mysql_num_rows($result) >= 1)
{
# found it
}
