Building a photography portfolio site

I am going to be building a photographer’s portfolio site. They are not tech savvy but would like to update their own site. One of the pages would be a thumbnails page and I would like to somehow create this dynamically.

Is there a way to have a page read and load thumbnails based on a text file or xml document without buiding databases?

I basically wouldlike my client to edit a simple text file or xml doc where they can simply add the path or url of an image and the web page would load the thumbnail into the site.

I recall php can read text files for copy, but is there a way to load thumbnails?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

@JonaApr 03.2005 — PHP can read text files or XML documents, but it can also read binary image files. I doubt that your client will like any of those ideas. Your best bet is to make a simple CMS where the client logs in, goes to "upload an image," uploads the image, names/renames it (and can rename others), is given the URL to the image, goes to "add new," types in the display name, URL to the image and any other information he wants, and, of course, logs out. That's the most user-friendly way to go about it. If that's more work than you got paid to do, you might just setup a pre-made CMS for them, such as Textpattern.

@s1deusauthorApr 03.2005 — Thank you. People recommended using Php to handle site requirements. I was told to try and use the ReadDir command and have my client upload the files to a specific directory. What do you think about this method?

Also, have you used textpattern before? Is it appropriate for a thumbnails site (no, itis not porn :])?

@JonaApr 04.2005 — You could have them upload to a specific images directory and read from that, yes.

I've used Textpattern before. It's good as a content management system. I had originally planned on using it as my blog, but it didn't work for just how I like my blog to be. It should handle a thumbnail site fine. In fact, I believe there are thumbnail plugins available to provide any extra functionality you want.

@s1deusauthorApr 04.2005 — Yes, I was going through Textpattern' plug-ins forum. They do have a thumbnail gallery plug-in. I will be experimenting with this today.

Thanks for everything, I will keep you updated.
