How to build a search engine for an website ?

Hi everyone,

I’m newbie and just have a very basic understanding on how a search engine works. I intend to build my own search engine for my site (private/internal search engine) but don’t know where to start. Anyone have any supporting documents or examples?

Thanks,

@george1234Mar 21.2005 — It's much more complicated than you think, if you want to build your own. What sort of features are you looking at, and how many sites?

As a start, you might want to take a look at something like Zoom (http://www.wrensoft.com/zoom/) which can pretty much build the search engine for you by indexing the sites you point it to. Plenty of features too.

@NimbusMar 24.2005 — I'm still unsure of your requirement, but if you wanted a script to search just your website, InterSpire's FastFind is the best I came across.

Hope that helps.

@bangbang262authorMar 24.2005 — Thanks Nimbus ?. As I said above, I want to build my own search engine for my website, just a demo version. I need some kinds of supporting documents which help me to get a better understanding of what I should do/proceed.

FindFind is free and comes with a detailed documentation.

@_lt_Eddie_gt_Apr 01.2005 — Take the top 3 as an example, Google, Yahoo and MSN. They all take their initial data from databases so a good understanding of SQL is needed including subquerys, joins and filters etc. Most of the SERPS though, are determined at application level, so you'll need to sort them in some sort of relevant order in the script or compiled code. You have to decide why website x should be listed above website y. Mostly, a list of criteria is tested for then sites scored against it. All I can say is, good luck!

What platform/languages are you using for this?
