Streaming Media in the Web

Hi,
This is my first message. Actually I’am trying to create an interactive musical website, where any user can register, download or listen to their favourite songs, etc.,
I need to know what is the basic requirement, in the server side (Like bandwidth, space, etc.,), and also suggestions on how to do that is appreciated.

@scragarMar 10.2005 — #first it will need some form of serverside lang: ASP, PHP or CGI will be more than sufficient.

then you will need to look for file size restrictions and such, many set them at low values which is useless for music and videos.

Do you have enough space for all your files, a database of users and still have enough for your pages and a few more songs?

bandwidth should be decided on via testing(see how much you use in a single visit and gues how much multiple visitors would use)

As u said, I'm going to use either ASP or PHP.

No problem on file size restriction. We can get enough space to have enough files.

My problem is, Just now I started gathering requirements. So, for this I need to know what is the basic requirement. I can enhance it later depending upon the no. of users.

Suppose if I have somewhat around 500 songs and some 1000 users are accessing if, For example.,

What could be the bandwidth needed for this, server space, and so and so details.

Please give me all the info. regarding this (Whichever u know) So that I can get some idea on how to proceed. Also I can know whether I can do it or not.

Please help me in getting this done.

@PeOfEoMar 11.2005 — #The total number of users does not tell us much, only how big your data base might need to be. How many users do you think might be using your website at any given time? Sounds to me like you are going to need a pretty hardcore line and a pretty sturdy box.
