Cannot get a JPEG to appear !!

Hi, I am very new to this board and HTML,so you will have to bear with me. I am just beginning to learn how to write HTML using Notepad and tutorials from the web(this is just a hobby for me at the moment)I can get gifs to appear in my pages no problem, but whenever I use a jpeg it does not appear. I end up with a box with a red cross in it.What am I doing wrong? Both types of images are saved in the same folder etc. Thanks in advance from a beginner,
