Programming environment

I’m sure this is going to sound really stupid and honestly, I don’t know much about php and mysql (nuts and bolts). I was a COBOL / PL1 datbase programmer in my previous life so I know how to code, but I don’t understand the dabase admin. stuff and all the environment variables, etc.

Thus far, I’ve been creating my php pages on my home computer (W2k Server) and then ftping them up and testing online – not terribly efficient. I have several sites that I’ve added a database to and use the php for the queries, and updates.

So, in browsing through the forum, I found this link:

http://www.appservnetwork.com/

to install

PHP 4.3.10
Apache 1.3.33
MySQL 4.1.8
Zend Optimizer 2.5.7
phpMyAdmin 2.6.1-rc2

I have no desire to have my machine serve out a database. What I’d like to be able to do is run my pages from my desktop w/ the sql code and php and test them here, rather than uploading each change.

My other difficulty is my reseller account has phpMyAdmin but it keeps coming back w/ page not able to display about 80% of the time so I can’t use it to update the database. I either have to run a sql statement from phpMyAdmin or do it from a webpage. For example, I needed to delete 5 records and it wouldn’t let me check and delete them all or check and delete 1 at a time. Another example is I had to add a target=”_blank” to some the html code in the records. It affected about 10 records, and I could 5 of them updated, but the other 5 kept bringing back the not able to display. I finally had to write a sql update statement for it.

So would installing the above package solve any of my issues? And if so, would it create any additional problems for me on my home computer.

Thanks again.
Michelle

@mgrunkauthorFeb 23.2005 — No, I'm considering it, but am not sure it would make my life easier.

@phpnoviceFeb 23.2005 — PL/1? Must be a mainframe programmer? Me, too. Still am. I program for everything -- Web sites, desktops, midrange (IBM OS/400), and mainframe (IBM VSE/ESA). ?

As you can tell by my moniker, though, I'm very new to PHP/MySQL. :p

I don't exactly understand just what your question is, though. Yes, you should be able to install all of those things on your local machine -- though I don't know how well they will play with your Windows operating system. Generally you would only find those thing in conjunction with a unix-flavored OS.

Sorry I can provide any more useful answers. Perhaps someone more familiar with them will come along here. Cheers.

@LiLcRaZyFuZzYFeb 23.2005 — well...it works very well on windows systems too.

it will simply set a php/mysql environment, you wont need to upload your php files on every change...but can test them on your local server(i.e. localhost)

@mgrunkauthorFeb 23.2005 — Ok, I'm clueless - installed the package but I don't know what to do now. I see an appserv folder with all the apps installed under it, but I don't know what to do now.

The "Test Apache Configure File" was good

The Apache Services Monitor is running

The WinMySQL is running and has the message:

(My ODBC)

Driver 3.51 Not Found

I have a home network through a router - I don't want anyone connecting to my machine, is there something I need to do w/ port 80?

Do I copy the database from online down to the desktop?

How do I get php scripts to run on the desktop now that it's installed?

Yep - I truly don't know what I'm doing.

@mgrunkauthorFeb 23.2005 — I am over at the forum for:

http://www.appservnetwork.com/

And I think I'll bug them a bit.

Thanks for the help here.
