The next step in my (server-sided) web development learning process should be?

I’m wondering what I should learn next. I currently know xhtml, css, javascript, and can create decent graphics with fireworks and freehand. I currently work in the Macromedia environment; however……

I want to be able to build server-sided applications, such as chat rooms, forums, shopping carts, email platforms and more specifically, in the future, an application that will let user to my site be able to use a design wizard that will recreate a webpage for the user based on the users input. Similar to that found with tripod or geocities. I don’t know Java, ASP, CFML, PHP, Perl, or any server sided scripting language for that matter, but am ready to take the plunge and learn what I need to. My problem is that there are so many languages that I can’t decide and don’t know which language I should learn. Do you have any recommendations? Specifically to build the above described applications? How lengthy is the learning curve? I work full time and am self educated. Thanks for reading this and your responses would be much appreciated.

@pyroFeb 12.2005 — Well, it really depends. Some of the stuff you're talking about is pretty hard-core. I'd recommend starting out with PHP, which is a very versital, powerful language without an overly steep learning curve. From there, you'll probably want to look into something like Java/JSP. Also, look into learning a database - MySQL is a good choise with PHP.
