Informed Opinions

I wanted to add an original JavaScript program to my portfolio to perhaps enhance my chances when interviewing for a web-programming position. I wrote the below ‘numberless’ calculator thinking it might be a good program to showcase my JavaScript coding ability. I would like some input as to if this would be a good example or not. I know opinions are as varied as the people who have them but I wouldn’t want to show something that was mediocre or would be more of a negative.
I did several searches and failed to find a JS script calculator that did not use JS Math functions and was also based solely on strings.
Any constructive thoughts would be appreciated.

@7studFeb 01.2005 — It sounds very impressive, but I wonder whether anyone you interview with will have any idea what a no-number calculator means. They might wonder: why didn't the guy just use numbers?

Something that might be more important than no numbers would be a slicker interface: sharper graphics for the buttons, which are currently very blurry, and a better results display, as well as getting rid of the big blank spot in the keyboard with the 'ready' message.

But, you did say it was for a web programming position, and not web-design, so maybe it's good as is.

@7studFeb 01.2005 — I just looked at the source code as well, and it seems pretty simple. It would be nice if you had an example that showed a broad knowledge of javascript: reg expressions, user created objects, prototype functions, arrays, creating a closure, etc.

The hot new subject seems to be using XMLHttpRequest objects to dynamically load parts of a page, like Google Suggest. Google Suggest dynamically loads a drop down list of search terms based on the letters you are typing. Each subsequent letter that is typed in causes just the drop down list to refresh with the new top ten google searches that match what you typed in so far.

@thedosmannauthorFeb 02.2005 — Thanks for your input.

Your comments on the interface are appreciated. I took a good look and I didn’t spend enough time on it. I guess I was too busy looking behind the interface. I plan on revamping it. As for creating a calculator using no numbers or math functions being ‘simple’ I’m not convinced. . I do have examples of most of the common JS methods you mentioned on sites I’ve worked on. My intent was to challenge myself with an original JS code that showed a grasp for code logic. My thoughts were that a numberless, no math, process would be a good challenge. BTW- The display window at the bottom does show an example of a page element dynamic change.

I do appreciate your thoughts on this.
