Increment a file

Hi! I am using the following to try to increment the numeric contents of a file and then print it.

$hits = file (‘../templates/hits.txt’);
$hits++;
$record = fopen (‘../templates/hits.txt’, ‘w’);
fwrite ($record, “$hits”);
fclose ($record);
print $hits;

It just prints “Array”. What am I doing wrong?

@NogDogJan 31.2005 — file() reads the specified file and writes it to an array, storing each line of the file as a separate array element. So, assuming a 1-line file with just a numeric value:
$hits = file ('../templates/hits.txt');
$hits[0]++; # value of first line in file (line 0)
$record = fopen ('../templates/hits.txt', 'w');
fwrite ($record, "$hits[0]");
fclose ($record);
print $hits[0];
Success!
