Jscript stopped working in IE – halp!

Hi all –

I’m experiencing an unusual problem with Internet Explorer (Mac) – Jscript seems to have stopped working completely.

I’ve tried everything I can think of – turning the “enable scripting” option on and off, using different versions of IE, rebooting the system, trashing Internet Preferences, trashing Explorer preferences, downloading IE5.1 and replacing my previous version completely, and all combinations of the above, with zero effect.

Javascript is working fine in Netscape, but no versions of IE which I have or install seem to run Jscript at all any more.

I’m wondering if there is some file that IE needs to make scripting work which has become corrupted or deleted, but it would have to be something that
1) Explorer isn’t replacing when I install and run a new version
2) Netscape doesn’t need, since it’s still working fine

Can anyone suggest anything, I’ve come to the end of my ideas…

Cheers –

Gordon k

@organicaauthorJan 29.2005 — Hi Fang -

Scanned my system and it comes up clean.

To be honest, I can't remember the last time I had a virus on my Mac...

@FangJan 29.2005 — Was it the correct "enable scripting" ?

Tools > Internet Options > Security > Internet > Custom Level... > Scripting > Active Scripting > Enable

@organicaauthorJan 29.2005 — That would be the Windows version I think...

For me it was

Preferences > Web Browser > Web Content > Active Content > Enable Scripting

But in either case, I hadn't intentionally disabled scripting at any point - one day it was working, the next day it wasn't.

@shagglyFeb 11.2005 — hi did anyone get to the bottom of this problem . i have a similar issue and as i have no idea what i am doing , hopefully someone could help me please . Nothing seems to work now on my machine that requires javascript i checked the security custom settings and everything is set to enable but it still doesnt work . i can only think it has something to do with some dodgy adware that ended up on my machine , the offeroptimizer one , i found the link to uninstall this but it needs javascript enabled doh !!! so going round in circles . Is it possible that i have deleted something in error as i went thru the add/uninstall program list and got rid of a few things before when i was trying to get rid of this adware in the first place . Please help its driving me mad..............

thanks

@_Aerospace_Eng_Feb 11.2005 — What OS do u have shag? may be spyware or a virus but could be just an option you disabled, i recommend Spybot Search and Destroy, its a nifty little program that will pick up most adware, another good program is adaware by lavasoft, and possibly CW Shredder, repair the problem on your own, find a program called hijack this, use it and post the results

@shagglyFeb 11.2005 — thanks .

just running normal windows xp .

i have seen people posting stuff using the hijack thingy and resolving the problem of xilim offeroptimizer that way but i was hoping to get away with a more simple solution and i found a link where someone had called the originators of the spyware who forwarded an uninstall link .

searching through every javascript problem thread on this site i have just come across a link for a download from microsoft for script 5.6 so i will try that when i get home tonight and see if that fixes things .

Appreciate the help anyway .

Thanks again.
