Your Search Engine!

Many articles around the web are stating that Google is losing its ground in the SERP’s with MSN and Yahoo cutting the slack with rebuffed Search engine results and local searches for information content.

Yahoo and MSN have been notorious for being more Business oriented and showing companies first.

@betaJan 25.2005 — My engine of choice is Google - it's simple, fast, broad and doesn't spam the user with adverts.

You can view the market share that many of the top SE's hold here. As you can see Google is still dominating the market - even with lots of newcomers striving to gain a piece of the search engine pie.

@BoooozeJan 26.2005 — Im with google all the way. long as they dont do anythign to piss me off:p. i vere really liked yahoo, cause there front page has too much. i hate msn cause its a microsoft product, but google is plain simple, and right to the point. if i want news, ill go to a news website, not a search engine. i like google because its a search engine. thats all i want.

@betaJan 26.2005 — I totaly agree - Googles sheer simplicity is the main reason for its success.

@IntensityauthorJan 29.2005 — I like Google more for searches eventhough I haven't even really given the other SE's a real good chance since their latest revision.

But I do like Yahoo and MSN more, since I actually rank in top 5. ? By the way Google has been vigoursly spidering my site for the last 2 - 3 days. I normally have approx 8 - 9 MB per month of bandwidth, and it on visit it took up 29MB, and the next day up to 56 MB. Got to love it. I must have some Candy Cane hidden in my site somewhere.

Hopefully this will help by ranking and get me out of the friggen Google sandbox or filter.

@IntensityauthorFeb 05.2005 — Now two things that all of you have to take into consideration is with the new roll outs of yahoo and msn SE's.

Yahoo has its new contextual search engine version Contextual SE

and MSN has just officially released its new Search Engine

These engines, if given a true chance could change your mind.

@vinothFeb 12.2005 — I use yahoo and like it very much rather than gooogle.

@scragarFeb 12.2005 — I type a webby at the top of the page.

IE say's Oh look, I'm too silly to find the page.

Let's do an instant 3 page MSN seach instead.

I say no.

I go to spread firefox.com

I get nice copy of firefox.

I never see MSN again.

That's how MSN get all there visitors, no-one chooses to do the search, it's all down to IE.

@IntensityauthorFeb 13.2005 — To be honest with you I don't like Microsoft products neither.

But if the Search Engine Results do provide better search results, I personally would lay my pride aside and continue to strive for a better productivity.

Lets focus on the SERP's.

@philawebFeb 16.2005 — Google is definitely still my favorite. It's is easy to navigate, I get the results I'm looking for and it's fairly easy to figure Google out when it comes to optimizing pages for indexing.

Yahoo! (or inktomisearch) is providing results for Altavista and Alltheweb as well, and Yahoo! is getting more into the action these days by a better algorithm. It takes them tons of visits by their robots though to update pages, where Google is very stable and updates every 14 days with concentrated raids on all pages in one sweep.

MSN is the worst of the three. When I search for a web site domain I might get a page telling me there are 320 results, but when I go to the second page there are suddenly no more results etc. MSN needs to do their homework.

Another good search engine is Gigablast. Well, they don't update very often, perhaps every two months. But, they have indexed all my pages without me even trying to submit any web sites.

And that is it. Hotbot, Info, Kanoodle, Looksmart, Mamma, Excite, Search, Teoma, Metacrawler, Lycos, Ask Jeeves, Wisenut, Overture and Dogpile don't even come close, even though some of them are moving forward.

Does anyone have any experiences with non-english search engines?

One of my web sites is indexed by the Chinese search engine Baidu - the fiercest competitor to Google in China.

@jettlarueMar 03.2005 — some of you said you didnt like all of the extra stuff. neither do i but try these: http://www.search.msn.com http://www.search.yahoo.com

@IntensityauthorMar 03.2005 — Seems like Yahoo and MSN are closing the gap. They need to. Extra competition might even make Google work at a faster pace, eventhough this might be hard to believe. Google needs to watch their back.
