Linking to other sites.. will it help my page rankings?

I know links to my own website are obviously very important in increasing page rankings, however, I’m starting to hear a few rumours that seem to suggest linking to other sites on my site, also increases my own site rankings?

I don’t really see how this would help (apart from for users of the site who want to find similar sites), so I’m interested to know if you’ve heard anything similar?

(I do however realise linking to other people is also likely to help get reciprocal links)

Any thoughts would be apprecited.

@IntensityJan 25.2005 — The answer is yes. Link to authority and experts site that rank very well and it will help your ranking, especially in Yahoo and MSN. But there are other factors that play other parts in this.

In Yahoo type this in the search field

"Morgan Carey" "anchor text"

and read that article. ?

All the answers you need!!

I don't have the access to the Search Engines right now.

@happy_handsauthorJan 25.2005 — Thanks Intensity.

I found the page I assume you were talking about:

It's a great article on anchor text links, so thank you. It also makes it clear my other plan of setting up lots of optimised mini sites for various keywords, linking to my main site is going to be a good idea. Unfortunately though, although it covers in quite clear detail the importance of anchor text links into my site from others , it doesn't seem to make any mention of links out of my site to other high ranking sites, as you mention?

I realise it's important not to just become a link farm web page, with hundreds of links to unrelated sites, as I think these tend not to be appreciated in search engines? However, with my main website, I really don't want to link elsewhere if I don't need to!

Do you know of any other articles about links out, for improving that page? (I'm sure there must be quite a few highly rated sites that have absolutely no off-site links at all!)
