Has anyone heard of any negative comments regarding churches utilizing the .com rather than .org for their domain?

Such as, consumers need to be cautious of donating to relief funds to churches with the .com, as this may be a scam.

I have a church who would rather utilize the .com because they feel it is more user friendly for the memebers, however, I want to ensure this won’t have a negative effect on them.

@scragarJan 13.2005 — most people who add .com to everything don't deserve to use the internet. the number of times I've seen people opening something like www.mysite.net/folder/file.cgi.com is rediculous, then they complain to others about "the nets not working".

personaly I think chosing .com is just giving in to the people who shouldn't be allowed a conection, but then I'm biased(a few of the numpties complain to ME, I'm nothing to do with it. Yeah I fixed the problem with it for you but you should learn to solve problems yourself...)

@shopkanjiJan 13.2005 — Personally, I would buy both the .com and the .org. Have the official website at your-church.org, but use the .com to transfer people to the .org.

This happens all the time on the internet. Look at sites like npr.com and npr.org.

That way you can be convenient to the everything’s-a-.com, won’t loose people, and guarantee you won’t get a quasi sister site where you’re a .com and some scam website is a .org operating under your name.

With domain names at only like 8 bucks a year at places like godaddy, it’s a no-brainier.

@Compguy_PeteJan 13.2005 — I have to agree with shopkanji... buying both is surely the way to go if the name is available to buy.

Speaking of supid people and domain names... How about those clients who type every domain name into the yahoo search box and then call you and say:

"I can't find my site" or "why is my site not up"

@David_HarrisonJan 13.2005 — When my grandma wants to check her email, she opens up Firefox (I managed to convert her! 10 points for me ?) and just types her email address into the address bar. By sheer luck she happens to get redirected to hotmail.com and then she carries on signing in as normal.

*sigh*

@rsdJan 14.2005 — To follow internet standards, I tried to get my church to register as .org but they wanted .com and wouldn't budge because "That's what everything uses" and "That's what people think of when you tell them you have a website".

You can direct them to ICANN for more information.

They're the ones that govern the domain name registration rules.

I was reading here the other day, since my host site is offering a bit of special assistance for newbies like me. I'm glad I read here, because I decided to buy both .ORG and .COM. My site for now isn't even open; I have soooo much work to do on it, though it works just fine (nearly 50 pages; groan!).

But I don't understand most of what I'm reading here. I've heard of a DNS, of an IP; that's about as much as I know, and it's pretty much the same with building my web site, though people from these forums, and sometimes, my ISP, are being wonderfully helpful, so I actually am learning.

Anyway, I wanted to thank the people who suggested buying both .COM and .ORG, to sort of protect the name. I've been working with the name I chose, informally, for a number of years, and I remember thinking, at the time, that trying to invent a name people might not normally cook up would be a good idea. Yet I've been humbled too many times - it seems somebody has usually beaten me to some name or other. However, this time, success! Not a trace of anyone else using the same name.

My ISP is so helpful that I'm hoping tech support will lead me by the nose through managing my domain, though I get scared when I see talk about "map" and "MX" - I have no idea what that's all about <g>.

But - thanks to remarks made here, I have .ORG and .COM. What then happens to, say, .NET and maybe .CA, as I'm in Canada? Or any other country? I'm hoping my site doesn't get so popular somebody else wants to use my name <deadpan>.

That sounds like something I'd do. The problem is a combination of ignorance and unbelievable disorientation as a result! Because I'm an uncomputer person, I have some sympathy for that sort of computer-behavior, for people who are old, like me <g> But - it's also very tough to teach such a person, as my SO will vouch for. Poor guy - just about tears his hair out - yet I do learn, eventually.

@genbintnFeb 10.2005 — My husband and I run a small web hosting service, and we recommend to all our clients to buy the "big 3" -- .com, .net and .org

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents worth ?

Sounds like a good recommendation, to me! Too many pennies for me, though, so I had to forgo .NET. (weeping!)

<hehe>

@shopkanjiFeb 22.2005 — For the church I definitely would go with the .org just because of the type of organization a church is. If I could only afford one domain, I would go with .org

As I recommended earlier, I would also go with the .com since that’s what people think automatically by default when you talk about websites.

If I had the money, it would be nice to buy the .net as well, but that’s only if I had the money. For the church I definitely would worry about the .org and .com because the .net I’m not too worried about.

Same with the .biz, .info and .everything-else. For a church, I wouldn’t be too worried about somebody buying OURCHURCH.BIZ and the domain name being taken as legit and equal to OURCHURCH.ORG.

If I was really paranoid and had the money, I’d focus not so much on the .net .biz and so forth but more on similar domain names. Getting OURCHURCH.ORG and OUR-CHURCH.ORG would worry me more than the .biz.

If I was a Canadian Church my first priority would be with the country specific organization code if one exists. I don’t know what it is, but following the pattern of other countries I’d imagine it to be something like OURCHURCH.ORG.CA then get the American OURCHURCH.ORG then get the Canadian default OURCHURCH.CA and then the American OURCHURCH.COM. Again, have all those domain names point to the first one you got, then one you’ll be promoting. But make sure you promote just one and keep it consistent.

then the American OURCHURCH.COM.
.com is company, not "American". There is a .us extention though, that would be American.
