Deprecated Tags

Recently I submitted my site to be reviewed and someone didn’t like that I used deprecated tags. I like HTML and I like doing things the hard way. Anyway, my question is does it hurt to use old HTML tags like <center>, <u>, <font> and using tables to layout the page? I’m comfortable using old school HTML as long as it will continue to be supported by current browsers.
If anyone can give me a reason to change my ways please help me before I find myself regretting my decision to stick with deprecated tags.
Thanks,
corepages

@ray326Jan 12.2005 — As long as you're just screwing yourself around using less than best practices it's no problem. Your customers on the other hand deserve better and keeping up to date with current thinking in whatever field you claim as a profession is just part of participating in that profession IMHO. One of the leading advocates of standards-based design is offers the whys and hows on his site and here. In particular check the microsoft.com and slashdot "rework" articles.

Those tags were depricated for a reason; they don't work on all browsers. The idea is to encourage you to write pages that work well on audio and Braille browsers. Also, when an element is depricated browsers are given permission to not support it in the future. Read, mark, learn and inwardly digest http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/ and http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG10/ .

@kcarberryJan 15.2005 — I can sympathize with you, as I am old school HTML as well. However, I've made the decision to learn the new methods in order to maintain a professional standard. Right now, my clients are all pleased with the design and functionality of their standard HTML websites. However, I'm afraid that if I don't catch up with the latest coding standards, I won't have any clients to be pleased or not pleased! Although I am perfectly fine with using just HTML and tables (I use them a lot like you) I realize that my potential clients could choose from anyone. If I use outdated/deprecated coding, I feel that it would be like someone trying to sell me a 486 for the same price as a P4 machine. Why not take the time and learn CSS, etc. now, so that when the time comes (and I'm sure that it will soon) that W3C won't let us use our beloved <font> tags? I think if you don't, you're only going to hurt yourself, so it's a personal decision.

@CharlesJan 15.2005 — Keep in mind that the "old" standards came out 14-Jan-1997. The "new" standards 18-Dec-1997. Also keep in mind that depending on where you are located and depending on just who your clients are, the old ways might actually be against the law. Some web sites are required to be accessible to persons with disabilities. The old ways make for inaccessible sites.

Nobody's more old school than me. I still use rotary phones and fountain pens filled from an ink bottle. But I also believe strongly in professional standards.

@corepagesauthorJan 15.2005 — Very convincing points. I feel much better now; I thought I was alone in this die-hard attitude. I'll just have to change as the technology changes.

Thanks a lot guys I appreciate.
