Communications on Website

I have two questions

  • 1.

    Does anyone know of any good chat software? I was looking for something similar to digichat that allows setup of multiple rooms.

  • 2.

    How would I implement instant messaging on my website. I would like to have something similar to AIM Express that will allow the members of my site to IM while logged into the site.

  • This is my site. It’s only about 2 weeks young.

    Right now all we have is message boards and news links. We hope to add chat and IM soon.

    @Sonic98authorDec 04.2002 — No one out there knows? Anyone know of any other web dev forums. I tried devshed, but they have not sent my activation yet..

    @VladdyDec 04.2002 — For both chat and instant messaging you need server side support. Are you trying to implement chat within your web site or looking for a stand-alone soft?

    @Sonic98authorDec 04.2002 — I want it with-in the website. You probably have never been on collegeclub or blackplanet before. But when you log onto the site you can send IM/pages to other members of the site. That is what I am looking for. I want the people of my site able to IM each other using thier username from the site without having to sign up for an IM client seperate from the site.

    @VladdyDec 04.2002 — Without looking at the two sites you mentioned (do not feel like signing up for either of them - I'm white and way past college ? ) I can say that implementing chat is easier. While using plug-ins may give you a better performance, basic chat can be done with simple javascript and server side support.

    IM is also can be done without venturing into plug-ins, but that would be a bit more programming than chat.

    Not sure you would be able to find a script like that that would need no tuning.

    @Sonic98authorDec 04.2002 — I'll look for you script around the net. My business partner who is doing the site for me seems to just have a nack for finding sites with good scripts even when the day he just stumbles across websites. What I had thought about the IM would be just to install IM software on our server and then set it up the same way you set it up to IM over an intranet. Would that work? But I have been searching for some good chat scripts, been having so much to take care of I have not been able to put the time in searching that I would really like.

    @VladdyDec 04.2002 — good luck.

    I can develop the client side for chat application, but I do not have Apache running now to develop the server side in php (could do it in ASP though).

    IM on the server would not do. You need to have a client running as a plug-in or stand-alone.

    @Sonic98authorDec 04.2002 — If we install the software on the server and use a java-based client similar to Aim Express, wouldn't they be able to do it that way. I'm not saying I have to do all the creation myself. My question is about simply installing instant messaging on the site and allowing people to download the client or a plug-in.
