Refreshing Part Of A Website

Hiya Guys,

I hope you can help. This has been a major headache for me.

I need a certain part of a webpage to refresh, but i’m not sure how to do it. At the moment, i’m having to refresh the whole page, which people find annoying, particularly as there is quite a lot of content on my homepage, and when people read towards the bottom of the page, the refresh causes them to lose where they were reading because it moves back up to the top of the screen after the refresh.

Does anyone know if it is possible to refresh just a small part of a website using PHP or Java, etc?

Thanks in advance guys.

A Java Applet would work. Another method is to use either FRAMEs, an IFRAME, or a server-side language to generate part of the page as an IMG tag call. Finally, for IE-only, there is an ActiveX call you can make (from JavaScript) to issue HTTP requests to the server for new content which is dynamically placed into the page (e.g., into a DIV).

@CharlesJan 01.2005 — The IMG idea is way bad an way more trouble than it is worth. Just use an [url=http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/present/frames.html#edef-IFRAME]IFRAME[/url]. You can refresh it with a MEATA refresh or with links in the surrounding page.

@Carl_BriggsauthorJan 01.2005 — Thanks for your help guys. The IFRAME idea sounds the best solution - its easy to do and will work a treat. I never thought of that idea ?

Thanks for your help everyone ?

Simply wondering if you or anyone else know some good documenation on java applets. I'm taking a course in java but its so slow. If theres something I can read that would really help.
