How do you keep track of time spend on a site?

As stated, how do you do it?

I need to keep track of the time I am spending on developing and maintaining a website.

I was looking to see if there was some kind of automated software to do the tracking for me.

I have looked at few but they all require me starting and stopping them.

I am using HTML-Kit and it has a built in time logger but it does not seem to allow it to change user.

So I was wondering if you track your time how do you do it?

@NeczyDec 22.2004 — Well, one very simple thing to do is have a peice of paper and pen at your work area, and when you sit down and start working, jot down the date and time. Then when you leave, write that down. At the end of the day, add up the time and walla. Its very simple, but its probably the easiest way to do it, and if the client wishes to authenticate your bill, you can show them the log. Simple, though I don't think thats the answer you wanted.

@PeOfEoDec 22.2004 — just pretend you spent a lot longer then you really did so you get more $$$ ?

@Compguy_PeteDec 22.2004 — this is the reason why I bill per page/item.

IF you have to do it by time:

What you can do is take an average of how much time you spend on X pages then average that time out, which should then give you a perfectly good method of billing the client.

@eyrieSep 08.2005 — I use a product called act28.CRM (http://crm.act28.com) to keep track of my time. It doesn't have start/stop, but has a timesheet entry thing where I guess-timate ? the amount of time I spent on individual jobs. At the end of the billing period, I simply create an invoice in the software for the client, and it picks up all the timesheet entries logged against the client and I select which ones to include in the invoice. Then it takes 2 clicks to send the invoice to the client as a PDF attachment, all within the software.

@Compguy_PeteSep 08.2005 — I think you get the same thing but cheaper with excel or a piece of paper for the cost of $324.00
