I am setting up an intranet site and need want to change the default look of index docs. I know that if there is no index.html file in a folder it brings up the files and folders in that directory. I would like to let people browse through these directories to get files. The problem is I do not like the default look of this screen. Is there any way to make this look a little bit nicer? Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

@ray326Dec 02.2004 — It depends on the server (e.g. Apache lets you sandwich the index with a HEADER file and a FOOTER file) but there's not much you can do in genderal.

@LeeUDec 02.2004 — You could just make the index file a listings of all the files in the directory. There are scripts available that will produce an index page for you, i.e. ScriptSearch.com

@stone_slingerauthorDec 02.2004 — Thanks for the great response so far. I am running Apache and Tomcat. This is my first attempt at web page design and administration. It is an intranet site, only available to my working group. How can the header and footer be changed in Apache? Or does this have to be done in Tomcat?

@ray326Dec 03.2004 — The names of the header and footer files is defined in the Apache configuration file. I believe they are HEADER and FOOTER by default but there may not be a default. There may actually be a way to tell the server to handle a generated index with a process. Another possibility with both those servers would be to put those "storage" directories under a single trunk directory then define ANY reference down that trunk be handled by a CGI process in Apache or an "indexing" servlet in Tomcat. (I can envision that definition easier in the JavaServer but it might need something rather advance like a URL rewriting definition in Apache.)
