Any suggestions on good books to read regarding web design/development theory. The more I begin to understand the technical and how things fit together, what they do, what they mean…the more I start to think about more abstract ideas regarding…well, lots of things. Like, the influence of print design on web design (for good or bad), the technology and its impact on society, and other broad thoughts and philosophies about the internet. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

@Stephen_PhilbinDec 02.2004 — Castro! That's the one! Man I've been sat here for a good 15 minutes trying to think of the name. Oh; and no I don't mean the cuban dictator.

Elizabeth Castro! Slap her name in Google and you should come up with some good stuff. There's a good chap on here that's always recomending her books.

@dreesemonkeyDec 02.2004 — I'm a n00b to proper web design and I just started reading Zeldman's book last night (got it as an xmas gift last year). So far it's a great read, it's inspired me to learn enough so I can drop my table-designed layout.

I definately recommend the book so far.

@spufiDec 03.2004 — "Defensive Design for the Web" by 37 Signals

"Don't Make Me Think" by Steve Krug.

Both are put out by the "Voices That Matter" section of New Riders and you could learn a ton of great stuff just from the books they put out.

Nah. I wouldn't say you have a lot of reading to do. I'd say you have an infinite amount of reading to do. I found out pretty early on that for every answer you find, about 3 more questions arise. In a way, that's what makes web development so great. The topic is vast. Huge. Gargantuan! You really can just keep learning and learning and learning. Although the same thing that makes it so great can also be a real spirit crusher. Sometimes you'll be working on a project and it just feels like that for every ten minutes of work you can put in, you have to go and reseach for about ten hours before you can get back to your work.
