Computer Science as a major

I’m a bit skeptical about majoring in Computer Science. I know i’m not going to cut it as a software engineer or anything stressfull like that. Is there any sites that list less stressful careers for computer science majors? Anyone know anything? Please help. Thanks.

@ray326Nov 18.2004 — The Greeters at Walmart seem pretty laid back but you'd still have to go to those early morning pep rallies.

@johndoe190Nov 18.2004 — Why dont you try and set your mind to try and be a software engineer if you like it, it may be stressful but stressful jobs usually benefit in lots of cash.

Not all software engineering jobs are stressful. There are technical ladder positions that do not require managing people but rather providing specific technical support for multiple engineering projects. Regardless, a computer science degree is going to get you a lot more job offers then IT (or whatever else you're considering).

@ItsOrreeecoauthorNov 18.2004 — I don't know. When I say stressful, I mean having a project left up me and having that deadline. I know that deadlines is something I have to get used to, but I don't know. I don't care about the money. What about careers in web designing? Could I pursue a career in web design or something with a major in computer science?

PMSL!!! Oh, you're nice.

Actually, on second thought, automobile mechanic wouldn't be too bad of a job... :p Good pay, at least, and you wouldn't get bored.

When you get out in the real world I think you'll find any job you pursue will come down to "performing" to some standard (like a deadline) and it's hard to do that without a bit of stress.

Echo; Every job has some stressful side to it. It's all about managing the stress. Pick something you enjoy but do not presume that it wont come with some stress. And do not give up at the first sign of stress - if you're going to be stressed, you might as well be stressed working within a job you like.

Best Wishes,

David

if you want the mad finances you need to do something that is not easy to do. I mean if everyone can do the job then how is it going to pay $$$? I am going into computer engineering which is electical engineering slapped together with comp sci. It will not be an easy feaild but all of my credit cards will be platnum and I will be driving a cadillac escalade with stock rims because I am too cheap to buy spinners, but I will have some tasty assets.

@BuezaWebDevNov 20.2004 — If you major in Comp Sci. and want an unstressful job, become an IT teacher at a technical institute or high school. You can basically just tell people to read the examples from the book and if they don't understand it, you can turn on the media projector and type out the code for them so they can understand how to code. ?

That's what my IT teacher did in high school. He was a good C++/Java programmer. ?

@PeOfEoNov 21.2004 — IT != comp sci professor.

http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/I/IT.html

Just thought it was weird when you were talking about teaching how to code and IT in the same sentence.

@ray326Nov 21.2004 — By the same token, CS is not Software Engineering. The skill sets intersect a little but in each case the "interesting" stuff is the part that isn't shared.
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@BuezaWebDevNov 21.2004 — You do get taught the samething, which is project management. This is one of the biggest things in IT, since, in large-scale projects, you have 90% of the time doing the project is spent planning and doing ER diagrams. 10% is spent on implementation.

@ray326Nov 21.2004 — If CS is teaching the same thing as SE then one of those departments is confused about its purpose in life. CS is "science", SE is "engineering" and there's a world of difference there. It's sort of like saying biology majors and medical doctor majors learn the same thing.

@davidbrentNov 22.2004 — Software engineering is a part of the Computer Sci. course in most English Universities (or colleges as you Americans like to call it!).
