Server Side Image Processing Tools

I’m in the process of coding a gallery script for my own site, but in the meantime, I need to get a user-submission gallery working on my class’s Mambo homepage.

I’ve tried several (currently Zoom Gallery), that all seem to require ‘external’ image processing utilities beyond what PHP provides.

Zoom is supposed to support NetPBM, IM, GD1, and GD2, none of which it’s able to autodetect. Without troubling my host, is there any way to check for the presence/location of any of these?

If they aren’t there, is there any way to add one of them, having access only to the server only by FTP and a login-panel?

Thanks.
