PHP- replace gifs with pngs

Alright, I’m sure many of you are familiar with the issues of placing a gif with a transparent bakground onto a dark page. The formatting changes the edges into white.

So, I determined using pngs would be best. You guys know how forums have the images to the left of each forum, marking whether it is popular, if there are new posts, etc. My question is how to edit phpBB so the code refers to [name].png instead of [name].gif

I’m rather new to php editing, so any help would be great.
