return value from pop-up window

What i am aiming to do is for the user to click a link on the main web page (window A), which will open a small pop-up window (window ?. Window B will contain thumbnails of images, with radio option buttons, and a button at the bottom, that will close the pop-up window (win ? and return the selected image to window A, which i can then insert into a textarea as an image url.

This is similar to forums where users click on a pop-up full of emoticons, and the chosen icon is inserted into the textarea.

phew.

Anyone have any pointers on this?
