Survey: Ideas that make it into your portfolio?

Hi Folks, I’m doing a survey for my postgrad studies. The aim is to answer the following question, which is directed at user interface designers:

What’s your hit rate – how many of your ideas make it into your portfolio, ie ideas that get turned into real work you could point to when applying for a job or pitching a client?

  • 1. About a third or less.

  • 2. About half or less.

  • 3. About two thirds.

  • 4. More than two thirds.
  • I’d be most grateful if you could take a few seconds to complete my online survey at

    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=82465672930

There is only one question. You don’t need to give any identifying information.

I’ll post the results when my survey is finished.

    Thanks in advance,

    Anthony

@DaveSWOct 19.2004 — So we have a dilemma: awkward customers or lack of ability?

@antqauthorOct 19.2004 — I'm not sure it's a dilemma. Based on the feedback I'm getting on this survey*, I'm inclined to think that it's a combination of factors, including:

  • - Issues that might be outside our control, such as non-disclosure agreements and the like.

  • - Ability but not necessarily what you might strictly speaking call "design" abilities. Selling or presentation skills, alignment of your personal brand with that of your employer (or client) for example.

  • - Ability to deal with awkward clients, colleagues, stakeholders.

  • I don't know if you've seen the results. If not, let me know and I'll post them. In short, most peoples' ideas go nowhere. That represents a lot of wasted talent and creative energy. I'm planning a follow-up activity to probe the reasons behind the results with a view to getting a better understanding on ways to raise our effectiveness.

    Cheers

    * It's early days. Full results won't be available for a while.

    @DaveSWOct 20.2004 — I haven't seen the results actually - so keep us updated.

The reason I'm finding to be the biggest is that people just don't know what they want - they'll say that they want it to be like (and then they'll give you an example). Then when you've done that they'll say it's wonderful but could you make it look more like (and then they'll give an example that has nothing in common with the first one, and is usually the total design opposite...).

There are extremes. I've got one customer that I'm currently on Design number 20 with. I've got another who loved the first really basic design I did (which I thought was just to be a basic layout...).

Maybe that's a gender difference... ? Come to think of it, all my male customers choose a design fairly quickly, whilst my female customers take a lot longer... hmm ?

@Compguy_PeteOct 20.2004 — WHy didnt you just make a poll question here if you only have 1 question for us... It seems rather odd to make us go all that way for one simple quesiton.

@antqauthorOct 21.2004 — Laziness: I've posted the link on several boards. By having one central link, I don't have to collate the results or do any calculations.

The downside is that I probably didn't get the same response rate. Comparing the number of views to replies seems to support this.

    Lesson learnt.

That said, the response rate has been pretty good and the results are becoming interesting.

Based on over 50 responses so far:

About 50% of people say a third or less of their ideas make it into their portfolio.

About 25% of people say half or less.

That's a lot of "wasted" ideas when you think of it that way.

    Success!
