ScriptLance.com

I was just wondering how many of you here are members at www.scriptlance.com and how good it works for you. I’m interested but skeptical. I’d appreciate some feedback on how well this has worked for those of you who are registered there.

Thanks!

@Stephen_PhilbinOct 14.2004 — Ooooo. I might have a look at this later. I had a look at rentacoder.com some time ago. Ridiculously enough though the site didn't work for me.

What about payment? Concerning funds, what are the benefits/limitations? I've read that there is a 5% comission -- are there any other restrictions to payment bids? Can I just register and begin bidding on any available projects, and if the webmaster selects me for the project, he also pays me and I complete the project for him? Is it just that simple?

@NevermoreOct 15.2004 — That's pretty much it. It's hard to start out because you aren't rated, but I've got 4 or 5 10s so I can do OK now. The biggest problem is the low-quality developers who make money by bidding $6 and ruin the whole process.

@JonaauthorOct 15.2004 — Yeah, I noticed how cheap some of the prices were. A lot of budgets are already pretty low; the developers giving even lower prices think that they can get high-quality software for a very, very low price. That really hurts. Anyway, I'll probably sign up. Thanks for the feedback, glad I didn't hear any horror stories. ?

@NevermoreOct 15.2004 — As long as you're sensible, you should be fine. The only point is that it isn't a replacement for 'regular' web-design work. As an example, my average hourly wage on Scriptlance is £10, whereas normally I would get about £22.

@Stephen_PhilbinOct 16.2004 — Where the snuckle do you get £22 an hour!? I think most places near me would string you up for asking for £10 an hour.

@JonaauthorOct 16.2004 — I know pounds are worth more than dollars right now, but if you make $10 an hour here, you might as well go to work at a local grocery store and get $30,000/year. If that's good pay, I'm cursed. Good pay should be $50/hour at least. That's just my opinion, but really, why charge so little? So what if it's not very difficult to do? If the person that wants it done can't figure it out on their own, they'll have to pay the price to get it done right.

Then maybe it's time for you to move... £10 per hour for professional development work is ridiculously low. Then again, to be able to charge professional rates, you have to be a professional developer, and I'd be willing to bet that a pretty large number of people who visit these forums are not.
