Good Evening Ladies & Gentlemen.

I was just wondering whether any of you budding young developers have decided to implement sIFR 2.0 into your websites. I myself mastered it on my local intranet and found it to be brilliant. There are a few concerns, sometimes you may not be able to link correctly to your movie files.

Back to the question; Are you interested in implementing it or trying it at least?

Best Wishes,
David

@pawkyOct 10.2004 — may i ask what it is exactly? ;P thx

@davidbrentauthorOct 10.2004 — Scalable Inman Flash Replacement Two Point Oh. It is a type of text replacement using JavaScript, flash.swf movie files. It enables style text that will be changed with regular styled text when JavaScript or/and Flash Player is not present. It is, in my opinion, better than using images, takes up less space and is easier, much to edit.

Sorted?

it can do just text, correct? if so, you can do this with php (as far as i know, i think ive seen it done and stuff on how to do it, though i dont know php yet) and would think php would be better.

@davidbrentauthorOct 10.2004 — Actually, to build on what i have said.

-----------------------------
  • 1. You create a movie file, or use the default one just changing the font, in Macromedia Flash (version any).

  • 2. You export that as a movie. Link your styled attributes to the flash file using a bit of javascript. I.e your H1 tags.

  • 3. Edit the CSS a bit.

  • 4. Upload/Publish.

    -----------------------------

  • The result basically is any letter you type into your H1 tag will be converted to the letter of your font in flash. This is provided the character exists in the font set. It has a failsafe system to save the non JavaScript'errs. You dont have to edit an image/settle for a crappy font. It is flashy (no pun intended) and looks good!

    That ok?

Sorry i was writing my reply for a few minutes. My post above was intended to be before your second post.

The bottom line is you can make your text al flashy and good looking using fonts that are not included in system fonts and be safe with the knowledge there is a high chance the user is seeing it as you want them to see it.

www.shauninman.com uses this. (if a different build of the script)

www.justwatchthesky.com uses this. (if a different build of the script)

and many other sites are starting to .

@pyroOct 10.2004 — I just used sIFR on a rather large project. It seems to work fairly well, though I did run into a few frustrations implementing it, due to it's lack of documentation (at this point). Overall, once you know how to use it, it's not overly hard to implement. When I was using it, there were a lot of different size/color combinations, so it'd probably be easier for most to use, if you only have 3 or 4 variations. I'm looking forward to watching it develop, and will likely use it in future projects.

Hit the nail on the head there pyro. The main frustrations when implementing was a blank space where the movie should have been rendered. Once implemented it worked perfectly. On my iBook however it did have some reactions to the default text smoothing but nothing to bad. It was useful and is good for large projects.

Im hoping some sort of manual will be put out with the general release. There were some bugs with keeping the JS and SWFs in the same folder. However mine now officially works.

@pyroOct 11.2004 — You can read up on the latest at http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2004/10/sifr-2.0-release-candidate. You can also find additional information about sIFR littered around the site (previous releases, etc).
