firewall software

Hiya, not sure if this is the right forum for this (if not, I apologise).

Do you guys have any reccomendations for firewall software? I keep leaning towards ZonaAlarm Pro because I’ve used it before a few years ago and I was pretty satisfied with it. Is there any thing better nowadays?

Thanks!

@soccer362001Oct 05.2004 — I use the free version of Zone Alarm and have yet to have any troubles with it.

@ray326Oct 05.2004 — ZoneAlarm is quite good but if you're not running dial up then you should pick up a router/switch with a built in firewall and just do virus protection on your PC. Netgear router/switches are selling under $10US now after rebates and they work quite well.

@ajimenezauthorOct 05.2004 — So you're recommending the actual hardware, huh?

I always figured that a dedicated firewall would be better suited if you're running a network and/or a server. But not so much for a stand-alone pc. Although the PC in question does have broadband.

I figured it'd be easier for this person who owns the pc to simply use the software since she doesn't really have a background in computers--especially in hardware.

Thoughts?

@DaveSWOct 05.2004 — as I understand it a firewall box is 'install and forget' - so it's probably easier than ZA, which is good provided you know what you're doing...

@davidbrentOct 05.2004 — hardware firewalls are where it is at. i am running my own nettywork so i have a nice reuter/inbuilt firewall. Zone Alarm did me good in the days of dial up.

If it's on broadband then the router is definitely the best solution. It actually makes DSL easier to use because IT handles the PPoE login, not software on the PC. With cable or DSL it simplifies things by assigning the PC's address and passing through the DNS info. You just set the PC to get all its TCP/IP info from DHCP and clear out the rest of the boxes. It will automatically get the IP, DNS and gateway settings from the router. Pretty much once you set it up you can forget it's there.

@ajimenezauthorOct 06.2004 — Excellent.

Thank you guys for all your input ?

@davidbrentOct 06.2004 — so what you going with?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@ajimenezauthorOct 06.2004 — Well it sounds like the router is the way to go. So I think I'm going to suggest it, especially for its minimal maintenance after installation. In fact, another friend had suggested to go with a router anyway, especially since they're pretty cheap these days.

I guess I just needed a second opinion ?
