I’ve been searching around a lot for this in the last little while, and have foudn nothing that works. My situation is this:
I have a program that outputs data into .htm files that have static names, that is, the data changes, but the file name and location don’t. A while back I got tired of opening 6 different directories to find the file I needed, and wrote a basic HTML page that indexed them nicely. Now the number of pages has risen, and the time needed to open each page to look for one line of data is becoming annoying. I’ve been looking for a Javascript search feature that can mimic the IE “Find in Page..” feature, but across multiple pages simultaneously, then display the results. The problems I have are that: 1. It’s all local, so CGI, Perl and other server-side can’t help; 2. The data in the pages is changing constantly, so an indexing/keyword based search is useless; 3. The individual pages are small enough that the data could be seen as soon as it loads, however, the number of pages warrents a search feature.

Can anyone help?

@NevermoreSep 28.2004 — What's wrong with the search function in your OS? As far as I know, all OSs have them.

@MiG_MasterauthorSep 28.2004 — Thanks for the quick replies, however, I was hoping for something that would be on the index page, just a small text box, and display the results from each page. Also, the OS search function, in this case Windows XP, just displays the page, rather than the results from the page. The ideal function is the "Find on Page..", but it needs to span multiple pages.

Edit: The pages are in a logical format, sort of, but the filename are too unwieldy to type often, so the index page seemed, and is, quicker. Also, I'm hampered by the fact it's on Windows XP. If this were in Linux, I wouldn't be asking.

@Stephen_PhilbinSep 29.2004 — I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question correctly. You want something like a google for your PC? Somthing where you can type in a keyword and it'll find pages with the keywords in their content rather than their filenames?

I'm pretty certain there is something like this on XP. I think you can also restrict where your keywords are searched for too, which folders etc.

@MiG_MasterauthorSep 29.2004 — That's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, but I'd like it to be contained within an HTML document, in this case the indexing page. I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear with the other posts, I'm not too good with the technical details.

@Stephen_PhilbinSep 29.2004 — Can't really see the reason for it having to be an html document. I'll have a look at the XP search options tomorrow if nobody posts the steps for you before then.

HTML alone can't do this though. Not sure what could to be honest. ActiveX is a definite no-no. I'm guessing a C language would be your best bet.

I'd just stick with the XP search though to be honest. Much more simple and efficient.

@NevermoreSep 29.2004 — Tools are available, although not for free. E.g.
