"Server" Side JavaScript

MstrBob requested this demo, however it does rather go off topic for the thread we was talking about it in. (start of conversation )

Okay here’s the demo URL http://sitebuilder.piko-technologies.com/demo.asp this calls an ASP page which generates a random number, which is then sent to the page you are viewing (via the javascript).

Tho this could just as easily be new content from a Database, or anything you like. And instead of replacing old content, just append to it. Use your imagination.

It could also be used such as when you click on link, button etc, to call your content and display it on the same page (error checking anyone?). The possibilities are quite endless.

I’ve also upload a .zip file with the three files in. Hopefully there you can see for yourself.

@MstrBobSep 26.2004 — Ah, I get it now. That could prove to be useful in certain areas. Thank you.

@jbotSep 27.2004 — XML-RPC or XMLHttpRequest, per chance? or plain JSRS ASP-stylee??

@zachzachSep 29.2004 — ASP.NET, I think, should be able to do this in a snap...Hey, PeoFeo! Get over here and say if ASP.NET could do this! :p

@PeOfEoSep 29.2004 — it can do it. Asp.net can do everything asp classic can do and more. If I want to I can revert to an asp classic form of codeing with the <% code blocks %> and all any time I want. I would say asp.net is easier to use then asp classic, it is also more powerfula nd performs better. But that should be expected since it is a new technology and was designed to be the new form of asp, the asp replacer.

@zachzachOct 01.2004 — I heard it can interact client to server side. Is that true? Like can it get SQL queries after a page has loaded, and do stuff?

vanilla ASP can do that. so can PHP, JSP, ColdFusion, etc. it can be done using a variety of techs including and not restricted to JSRS, XMLHttpRequest, XML-RPC, etc. it's not rocket science. you can even do that via JScript/ADO.

@zachzachOct 01.2004 — Well, ASP.NET work in all browsers.

Yes, I know about XML Requesty thingy. Or at least I have heard about it. I used to be a Javascript wiz, now im just a Javascript semi-wiz ?

no, it doesn't. ASP.NET is serverside only. it doesn't work in browsers whatsoever. however, the code it renders does. being Microsoft, tho, it doesn't always render cross-browser and cross-platform clientside code.

still it's very good tech, theoretically the most advanced there is serverside just now. J2EE, the tech i'm in the throes of using, is very good too. but not quite as fast to develop it seems. EJB is a pure nightmare apparently LOL

JS is very cool, especially when done right, coded well and not just blindly pilfered off some third-party site.

Success!
