Can’t log in as root on Linux.

Ok, call me a simpleton, but how the hell do I log in as root on Linux SuSE?

I set up a user name “mrherer” during installation assuming that this would be the root account as it was the only account I’d set up. However much of the time I get permission denied when trying to do simple tasks. It’s bad enough trying to get a compiler so I can compile the compiler I need to compile Apache so I can install Apache, withough being told I can’t do stuff.

I’ve tinkered with the manage user accounts bity for quite some time but still haven’t managed it.

@NogDogSep 24.2004 — I've never bothered trying to log in as root. I just open up a terminal window and do a [font=courier][color=red][b]su -[/b][/color][/font] (the hyphen is part of the command string) and then enter root's password when prompted.

@Stephen_PhilbinauthorSep 24.2004 — Yeah I can use the root console but that means having to type everything out all the time. Like instead of just right clicking a file I'm already looking at and just hitting delete I gotta open a command window and type out the full command. Plus there's stuff I just haven't got a clue how to do from there too. Like moving large and specific selections of images from a CD/DVD to a folder on the desktop.

@DaveSWSep 24.2004 — bootable floppy? I think it goes straight in as root if you do that, so you can edit usr/pwd.

@ray326Sep 25.2004 — Does your system start up in a GUI with a login or user chooser dialog? (I.e. something like xdm, kdm or gdm?) If root doesn't appear there or isn't allow there at this point you can often get in as a normal user, open a console, su and then alter an xdm-related config file to allow a root login. I've never done something like that because Mandrake and Redhat make it easy to login as root.
